The wildfires in California have filled me with grief and gratitude: Grief for those who have lost loved ones and gratitude for the miracles performed by firefighters protecting Santa Barbara.
The fires have caused me to reflect on why California continues to burn and what if anything we can do to help stop it. According to the EPA, Americans discard approximately 13.1 million tons of textiles a year, and only about 15 percent of that is reclaimed for recycling. This means that more than 11 million tons of textiles are dumped into landfills across the country each year. As they decompose they release methane, a harmful greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to global warming.
By up cycling beautiful textiles and vintage fabric, I can take a small stand against the firestorm that has broken our hearts this year.
